Winter Solstice

Lesson Plan #131

Teacher: Miss Katherine Victoria VanAnderland, Original Copy

Date: 08/15/2020

Overview & Purpose

Winter days are the shortest during this time. Winter is one of my favorite seasons and this is a lesson about what makes it the shortest day. A science lesson to investigate the polar axis. According to Google search, “The winter solstice, hiemal solstice or hibernal solstice, also known as midwinter, occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). ... The winter solstice occurs during the hemisphere's winter.”

Education Standards

  1. Problem Solving

  2. Reading Skills

  3. Logic

Objectives

  1. Understand what the Winter Solstice is?

  2. What are Time Zones and What does that have to do with the solstice?

  3. What causes it to be dark and light in Alaska for six months?

Materials Needed

Verification

Steps to check for student understanding

  1. Make a 3 D view of the solstice

  2. Find words that describe it and use them for spelling words on Monday

  3. Figure out Alaska and why does it only happen there to have light and dark for six months

Activity

Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson

I am so happy for you to be doing some science work. I hope you enjoy this lesson. I want you to write a short answer to what would you do if you had to deal with six months of darkness and six months of light? What would you do to adapt?
