Overview & Purpose

What is meditation? How have scientists explored the effects of meditation on the mind and body? In this lesson, students participate in a guided meditation, then learn about meditation and current research showing how meditation affects the brain and body. They then annotate diagrams of the brain and body with the information they’ve learned about meditation’s effects.

Steps to check for student understanding

  1. Stress Levels will go down

  2. Clarity of thought will present itself after meditation and yoga

  3. Write a before and after of what you feel with your five senses

Activity

Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson

  1. What is meditation?

  2. What changes did researchers document in the brains of people who practiced meditation for an hour a day, according to a new study? Did people in the control group, who did not meditate, experience the same changes?

  3. How did researchers measure these changes in the brain? Do scientists understand what these changes mean?

  4. The blog post highlights several other studies investigating how the brain body responds to meditation. What were some of these findings?

  5. What is the hippocampus? The amygdala? What is gray matter density?
